An anonymity-enabled post, 'cause I'm having a hardish day and need some distraction.

Say anything at all, and/or answer a question from the list...

1) What would make my life better?  What would make your life better?
2) How could I be a better friend? How could you be a better friend?
3) What's a secret you are afraid to tell nonymously?
4) What's something I don't know?
5) What should I be reading now?
6) What's something you wish quietly?
7) What do you regret?
8) How have you been able to be present and stop chasing after or worrying after or avoiding the Next Big Thing?
9) What's likely to make me laugh out loud? (I promise feedback on whether you're right)
10) What do you want to ask?

I'm just back from a Quaker women's retreat and it was honestly amazing. Very #8. So maybe one answer is, make more room for the nonrational, the spiritual, the complicated, and everything else I can still see my ultrascientific mom rolling her eyes about anytime I mention it even inside my head.

For #5, I just discovered and read this: If you want feel-good YA lit that will make you a little nostalgic for the good parts of high school, get it from the library and give it a shot.

And for #1 and #8, I agree with llema that weekends away that aren't overscheduled are really helpful for me. Camping trips, Quaker retreats - something where I'm not spending the whole time seeing friends or Doing Things, but I'm away from the internet and my normal life responsibilities for a bit, so I get some perspective.

What if chasing future big things is part of being present?

Is it too late now to distract you?

Small shameful confession:

The other night a slightly odd sexual thing that I myself do and enjoy came up in conversation and I said something dismissive and snickering about it. I thought I was years past that kind of nonsense! I didn't even consciously make the connection between what I was saying and my own life until I was in mid-sentence.

:shakes head sadly:

Here's a thing I'm afraid to say nonymously, to someone else.

Stop creeping on me. It's never going to happen. I'm afraid to be around you.

the thing that has helped me make my life better is to answer these questions:

What do you optimize your life for?
What do you want to optimize your life for?

Realizing I was optimizing for safety and wanting happiness helped me redirect my efforts and focus on the actions I chose and to make more conscious choices.

The usual way...smoke and mirrors. I usually distract myself with something else until I either find myself nose to nose with Next Big Thing™and am forced to deal, or, I break it down into much smaller parts I can check off a list and get through my keeping my brain focused on the smaller task instead of the overwhelming one.

I could be a better friend by checking in more often and finding more time to share in my life. And making chocolate chip cookies...better friends make those and share more often. I have it on good authority.

Thank you! I have been wearing and enjoying all of the wonderful socks!

Will I ever find out who you are, or will you remain a mystery? (:
